I've previously talked about my mentor and business partner, John C. Maxwell. He makes a habit of asking the successful people he is with, "What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?"
Two years ago, Angela Ahrendts (former SVP of Apple and previous CEO of Burberry) was a speaker at our annual Live2Lead event. When John asked Angela his famous question, she referenced advice her father had given her years earlier, "Give 60, take 40 in everything."
This is a countercultural approach. Most people contribute what they perceive to be 50% and then stand at the 50-yard line (metaphorically), waiting for others to meet them there.
Many people were probably taken aback by Angela's comment. Fair is fair and commitment should be matched with commitment, they might say.
Wise, servant-minded leaders; however, understand that you must give before you can get.
Leaders must go first and further if they want to build inspired, loyal, high-performing teams. It requires humility, grace and intentionality to do so.
Who needs you to go 60 for them today? Maybe they're experiencing adversity that's making it difficult for them to come a full 50 right now. Are you willing to bridge the gap because that's the kind of leader and person you choose to be?
Surrounding ourselves with other like-minded leaders makes it easier to bring Angela's advice into reality.
If you're in a place where you could use some inspiration and encouragement yourself, you may consider attending Live2Lead this year.
