Two Reasons Why People

Stop Growing

September 30, 2015

We are all born with a desire to do something significant. To become all we are made to become. This requires continuous development and improvement. There are many reasons why growth stops. Here are two worth thinking about.

1) The Law of the Rubberband

In midst of the busyness of life it is possible to begin to settle for the status quo. To begin aiming not to thrive but to merely survive. When this happens a person will cease to become who they are gifted and created to be. A person will stop growing. John Maxwell calls it the Law of the Rubberband. In other words, growth stops when you lose the tension between where you are and where you want to be. The problem enters when we lose site of or give up on the latter.

Do you have a vision for your life that is more compelling than where you are today?

Do you somehow feel like you are missing something?

Maybe there is more for you to discover. It’s not going to happen by chance though; you are going to have to lean into a process to find it. This leads us to a second reason people stop growing.

2) The Law of Intentionality

Growth doesn’t just happen. It requires work. It requires consistency. It requires a plan. What is yours?

There is an old saying: “champions don’t become champions in the ring, they are merely recognized there.” Former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier stated, “You can map out a fight plan or a life plan. But when the action starts, you’re down to your reflexes. That’s where the road work shows. If you cheated on that in the dark of the morning, you’re getting found out now under the bright lights.”

Maybe it’s time to begin a new growth process today.
