On the John Maxwell Team, the Law of the Lid is the starting point for leadership development and growth. The concept is straightforward – leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. It also determines the level of effectiveness attainable by their team.
As John points out in The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership if your leadership rates an 8, then your effectiveness can never be greater than a 7. If your leadership is only a 4, then your effectiveness will be no higher than a 3. Moreover, your team’s effectiveness will never be higher than your effectiveness, at least not for long.

Often leaders respond to frustration by focusing on improving and changing the people around them yet remain unsatisfied, frustrated and feeling alone. The most effective leaders lead change by constantly working to improve their own leadership effectiveness – beginning with self leadership (the toughest form of leadership) and moving from there to how they impact others. Moreover, when leaders learn how to share their need for growth openly with their team they create a safe, inspiring place for others to grow, take risk and assume ownership for the mission.
