6 Core Relationships Pt 1

August 16, 2023

As a leadership coach, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless individuals achieve remarkable transformations in their personal and professional lives. Through years of experience and deep reflection, I've discovered that our potential lies within six core relationships that we often overlook or take for granted.

1️⃣ The first core relationship is with ourselves. 🪞

Think about it: how do you talk to yourself? How do you lead yourself? Are you disciplined, encouraging and kind to the person in the mirror? The inner dialogue we've developed since childhood shapes our self-perception and self-worth. Acknowledging and improving this relationship is foundational to unleashing your potential.

2️⃣ Next up is our relationships at work. 💼

At work, we encounter a complex network of connections. From coworkers andmanagers to clients and vendors, our interactions in the professional realm significantly impact our growth. Building strong and authentic relationships with colleagues can lead to enhanced collaboration, improved performance and greater job satisfaction.

3️⃣ We must never forget the third core relationship - our loved ones. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

It's easy to get caught up in the demands of work and external ambitions, but our ultimate outcome, our legacy, is deeply intertwined with the love and support we provide to our spouse, children, and family. Prioritizing and cherishing these relationships enriches our lives immeasurably.

4️⃣ The fourth relationship centers around our inner circle, the people we surround ourselves with. 🤜🤛

As the saying goes, we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. Evaluate your inner circle, seeking those who uplift, challenge and inspire you. This support system can be a powerful catalyst for personal growth and achievement.

5️⃣ Core relationship #5 is our relationship with our community and the outside world. 🗺

Do you see it as an opportunity to make a difference, or do you view it defensively, protecting yourself from potential harm? Embracing a growth mindset and actively engaging with the world can propel you toward meaningful contributions and accomplishments.

6️⃣ Lastly, we have a relationship with our higher power, the thing we are looking to for hope, purpose and provision. ✝️

For some it's status, financial security, positional achievement, or some form of vague spirituality. For me, it's God through a relationship with his son, Jesus. Understanding and nurturing this connection allows us to align our actions with our deepest values and beliefs.

Understanding and nurturing these core relationships is essential for reaching our true potential.

My advice for leaders who want to improve their relationships is simple: Reflect on which area needs attention and start there.

Because remember, a rising tide lifts all ships.
